Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP) – Booth #701
GRIP is a week-long, hands-on institute offering several courses simultaneously for all levels of genealogists, taught by the top instructors in the field.
In 2019, 17 courses are offered in two different weeks in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Affordable on-campus housing is offered. Courses range from Tools for Digging Deeper to Practical and Advanced Genetic Genealogy and Chromosome Mapping. Courses include: Forensic Genealogy, Pennsylvania Germans, New England, Mid-Atlantic States, Italian, Irish, and Ontario and Quebec research strategies, writing proof arguments, mastering documentation, writing, editing and publishing, understanding and using legal documents, Developing Digital Research Skills (including organizing your own computer!) and Tackling Tough Research Problems.

BRIEF BIO: Co-Directors Deborah Lichtner Deal and Elissa Scalise Powell, CG, CGL, started GRIP in 2012 with four courses. The need for genealogical education in a relaxed, social, and friendly atmosphere has grown GRIP to the 17 courses being offered this summer. Debbie is a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) Board of Trustees and served as the chairperson of the OGS week-long Summer Workshop; was the 2010 Exhibits Chair for the annual OGS conference and the co-chair of the 2014 OGS conference. Elissa is a past-president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists; is the coordinator for the “Genealogy as a Profession” course at IGHR; was an instructor and creator of part of the BU Genealogy Research Certificate program; was the mentor for ProGen Study groups 1 and 25; and received APG’s Professional Achievement Award in 2017.
