Located in a beautiful mid-1930s Art Deco building in downtown Indianapolis, the Indiana State Library is home to more than 40,000 genealogy books and other print materials, including family histories, indexes to records, and vertical files and family charts. Our genealogy collection is not limited to Indiana, but covers all 50 states as well as international research. We also have a growing collection of genealogy manuscripts containing original family documents and research as well as a digital collection featuring family photographs, Bible records, maps, and more. Our microfilm collection contains over 10,000 reels of governmental and non-governmental records and we are home to the largest collection of Indiana newspapers in the world. The Indiana State Library also contains a large collection of Hoosier state and local history materials, including state government documents, county histories, and city directories.

Our helpful librarians can assist you with your genealogy research and help you located the records and resources you need, whether you are just getting started or are working on a long-time brick wall. If you can’t make it to the library, we offer an online Ask a Librarian service so you can ask your questions from anywhere and receive an email response within two business days.
