The Library of Michigan houses several important collections including Michigan, Martha Griffiths Michigan Rare Book Room, Law, State & Federal documents, Serials, and Main. The stacks are mostly open with some exceptions.  Our catalog can be found at http://35.8.7.98/search~S37.  Taking time to search the catalog and familiarize yourself with our holdings will make your research trip more fruitful. Items useful for genealogy research include Michigan newspapers, city directories, pioneer collections, and the county sections within the Michigan Collection. There are two pioneer collections, one located in the Michigan Documents and the other in the Michigan Collection. The Michigan Pioneer and Historical Collections is located on the second floor at call number MDOC F561 .M62. The Michigan Pioneer Records are located at call number MICH F565 .M532.

The Library of Michigan resides inside the Michigan Library and Historical Center located at 702 W. Kalamazoo Street, Lansing, Michigan 48915. Researchers can visit us on the web at http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/. The library is open Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There are no entrance fees, but there is a $1.00 per hour cost to park in the public lot located on the southside of the building. Parking is free on Saturdays.

There are five photocopy machines scattered throughout the building. Photocopying is self-serve at a cost of .20 cents per page. Please ask at the reference desk for assistance. Access to subscription databases such as Ancestry, Newspaper Archive, and Detroit Free Press Historical database (1831-1999), and the Detroit News database (1873-1922) is available. Additionally, there are six Viewscan III microfilm reader/printers which will print for .20 per page, save to a flash drive, or email out. Michigan newspapers are located on the second floor and are on microfilm. You can view a listing of the papers the library has at the following link: newspapers. Find the county you are researching and scroll through the list for the city and the paper name.
