Extending DNA Evidence: More is Better – Patti Lee Hobbs

SESSION: NGS2104-BCG-03 TRACK: BCG Skillbuilding

Many people are insecure about using DNA evidence to help prove ancestral connection. These insecure people are balanced by others who perhaps draw hasty conclusions with too little evidence. This lecture will show ways to extend DNA evidence to help the insecure folks and help those who may not realize they don’t have enough. As with all genealogical evidence, there is no magic formula; and different components of the body of evidence—both documentary and DNA—must be correlated and weighed to reach the subjective conclusion that the evidence is sufficient.

This lecture will discuss factors to consider in determining the strength of the DNA evidence. A range of techniques from easier to more challenging will be demonstrated. Beginners will learn how to lay necessary groundwork and how to use the easier tools for accumulating DNA evidence. Tools for using shared and triangulated DNA segments along with leveraging cross-pollination of testing companies will benefit the post-beginners.
