Used throughout the South from 1767 to 1866, the public wearing of a slave tag was required for slaves selling their owners goods in the open market.  This workshop examines the laws governing the slavery tag system, the economic system, and the tagging system’s value to genealogy, history, and the construct of the community.

 A No Nonsense approach to uncovering pre-emancipation documents that identify the slave holder and connect slave families. Also covered are how to identify slave kin who died before emancipation, understand the conditions of enslavement,  Free People of Color, and  “Those Who Want To Become A Slave.”
