More than 60 years ago, in 1956 some concerned local historians from St. Charles, MO formed the St. Charles County Historical Society with the aim of protection and preservation of the County’s historical and genealogical record.

The Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3), with its membership consisting of individuals, businesses, and organizations who support the Society’s mission to foster an understanding and appreciation of all aspects of St. Charles County history.

The SCCHS Archives is home to over 200 years of historical documents, maps, early government records, paintings, illustrations and photographs. The collection includes:

 Obituaries, marriage records, cemetery records, and church records

 Naturalization records, will books, and probate files

 Diaries,  journals,  early   school records, and unpublished family histories

 Records for the St. Charles City and County tax assessors and collectors

 Atlases, plat books, Sanborn and aerial maps

 Street files, land and property records, deeds and abstracts

 City directories and indexes of the county’s various federal and state censuses

Family history files contain information on over 75,000 people, often holding family letters, photographs, and other hard-to-discover family treasures. In addition, the former records, books, and indices of the St. Charles County Genealogical Society are located in the Archives. We maintain topical files on St. Charles County events, groups, and places that may interest researchers. A Microfilm reader/scanner, flatbed, and overhead scanner are available for patrons’ use in the Nichols Digital Media Center.

The St. Charles County Historical Society & Archives is located at 101 S. Main Street in the historic downtown district of St. Charles.
