Description:

Students will delve into essential topics designed to enhance their research skills. The sessions cover foundational aspects, reviewing and analyzing previous research, constructing detailed research plans, conducting research, and utilizing advanced strategies for overcoming genealogical challenges. Examples will be provided to demonstrate the techniques and strategies. Templates, worksheets, and other materials will be provided, which can be used for any genealogical project. Hands-on activities will help enhance the overall learning experience, while students work on their own genealogy project. By the end, students will have acquired a robust “toolkit” to pursue their family history mysteries confidently, efficiently, and effectively.

Intermediate (and advanced beginner)

Requirements:

Throughout the week, students will be working on a research project of their choosing. It will be necessary to have research materials related to that project, as well as a laptop for completing class activities and homework. Instructions for choosing a project to work on will be sent to students via email ahead of time.

9 – 10:15 AM Unraveling Ancestral Networks with the FAN Club Coined by Elizabeth Shown Mills, the FAN Club represents family, associates, and neighbors, the key people who make up an individual’s social network. By studying these FAN Club members, you can uncover crucial clues to solve challenging genealogical puzzles, such as an unknown maiden name or place of origin. Learn how to identify and track FAN Club members; a simple template will be provided for this hands-on session.

10:45 – 12 PM Evaluating Sources, Information, and Evidence Building on previous lessons, this session will provide a systematic approach to evaluating the accuracy and reliability of genealogical sources, information, and evidence. By learning to create and use an evaluation log, you’ll be able to scrutinize each assertion thoroughly so you can effectively analyze and correlate the data you’ve uncovered.
